Michiel advises and assists governments and state-owned companies as well as clients in the private sector, with a proactive and pragmatic approach.
Michiel started his career in 1981 at Van Doorne & Sjollema in Rotterdam. In 1985 he moved to Curaçao and joined VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne, where he was appointed partner with the firm in 1988. In 1997, Michiel moved back to the Netherlands, where he joined Trenité Van Doorne and in 2001 Simmons & Simmons, until his return to VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne in Curaçao in 2008. Since 2015, Michiel manages the office of VanEps Kunneman VanDoorne on St. Maarten.
During his career Michiel held several positions. He was Secretary and later President of the Curacao Bar Association. He was also President of the Foundation for Professional Training of Lawyers. Currently, Michiel is a member and a substitute member of the Appeal Councils of respectively the BES islands and Curaçao.

- Member of the Appeal Council of the BES islands Supervisory Board for Lawyers
- Representing an advising a group of insurance companies in the Dutch Caribbean in lengthy legal proceedings before the Rotterdam Court and in appeal before the Court of Appeals in The Hague, regarding coverage under a comprehensive property and business interruption insurance, concerning two large hotels on Bonaire and Curaçao.
- As Court appointed receiver in the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers Securities N.V. in Curaçao.
